Hey folks, I'm 33 years old I'm a little over weight but very active with work and I go to the gym 5 to 6 times a week.?

I was diagnosed with gout around 4 months ago and have been on a gout friendly diet every since. (I do have a couple of beers on an occation) Im on 200mg allopurinol and 50mg indomethacin. I have lost weight and doing pretty good on the diet. I am currently having an attack. what else can I do to keep this thing in check. I've missed too much work and in too much pain and not sure where else to go with it. Thanks for any help.?

    jba,

    ?

To stop an attack NOW, use colchicine if you have some.

    ?

To prevent further attacks, up your allopurinol to 300 mg. Have another blood test done.

But?there is no better assessment of proper allopurinol dosing than stoppage of all attacks. The gods have just told you that you are taking too little.

    ?

VERY few people can get proper control with just 200 mg. allopurinol.

Thanks, I just returned from the dr. He upped me to 300mg. and said I'm his only patient on the high mg. allopurinol. Only time will tell and hopefully Ill be able to make it back to work tomorrow.

That makes me wonder how many patients with Gout he has? Since it seems to me 300mgs seems like the standard dose. Myself?I think?I might be looking for a different doctor. It's sad that in this day and age most doctors still have no clue when it comes to treating Gout. Good luck. Limpy.

If you want to REALLY throw him for a loop, next time ask him for 900 mg., the highest recommended dose.

    ?

The dose you need is the dose that will give you consisten readings of <5.0 and/or the dose that will prevent ALL future gout attacks.

(Your doctor should crack open a book at LEAST once a decade.)

My good friend reccomanded him to me. He has had gout for years now and has it well under control. with thanks to this dr. I' guessing that my case is more severe than others. I am a big guy with a lot of muscle mass. I'm 5'9″ and weigh 300lbs. I am 40 lbs over weight. I have worked out more in the last month than I ever have in m life. I have always been very active and am naturally big.

I'm? a muscular 6/2″ and about 220# and I just started at 400 mg. after more than a decade at 300mg.

Probably a good rule of thumb is that allopurinol needs is not far from proportional to daily food intake.
